and if you're looking for a comedian, you might want to look somewhere else. Fall is here. With it comes crisp weather, beautiful foliage, college football, and fall festivals. Unfortunately, it also brings leaves. Turf grasses will soon make their way into dormancy for the winter, along with other plants and shrubs in your yard. That means you get to take a break from your lawn until spring, right? We wish! While our focus shifts a bit in the fall and winter months, there is still plenty to do to keep your lawn in top shape. The perfect time to trim and prune certain shrubs and trees is in the fall while they are dormant, and it is a constant battle to keep the leaves that have fallen contained. There is a huge Sweet Gum tree in my backyard that has already started shedding its summer coat, and as I drive through town I can see the wind beginning to blow early leaves through the streets. Most people and lawn cleanup companies bag their leaves and set them out with the trash or pile them up for the city to come collect with their vacuum truck. Is that really the best option?

In nature, leaves play a vital role in the life cycle of trees and plants. In the spring, a tree will leaf out and begin to soak up the plenteous rays of sun. Throughout the growing season, leaves are used to collect sunlight and turn it into energy for the plant to survive. In the fall you may not realize it, but there is a purpose for leaves on the ground. A thick blanket of leaves returns nutrients back into the soil, helps the soil retain moisture, and protects the root systems of plants throughout a cold winter. We know that in a typical suburban or urban landscape leaves aren't quite as necessary due to natural areas being mulched throughout the year. This doesn't mean that we should be taking all those vital nutrients to the landfill! We can help you create a system of recycling your leaves back into your lawn, or taking them with us to compost offsite. Leaves can be raked off the lawn and spread into shrub and flower beds as organic mulch, or incorporated into your home compost pile and used later in the year. Instead of waiting for spring to come again and having a monstrous pile of leaves to cleanup, why not get signed up for our Fall & Winter maintenance program to keep your lawn clean all season long?
